Whilst sorting through my late mother's papers I found a very brown and delicate newspaper cutting. It is a report on the inquest of a George Edwin Bearne of Melville Road Newton Abbott who had a brainstorm and killed his wife Elizabeth Jane Bearne with a coal hammer and killed himself with a razor. Apparently they had a daughter Elizabeth who was 12 at the time. I would like to try and find out more about this family as they are definitely part of my line. The daughter could still be alive as I believe she would be about 69 now, although she apparently had head injuries at the time of the killing. Could I place a notice on the website asking if anyone could throw any light on this murder? It was quite a shock to me as I did not know anything about it although my brother says he thought he had heard some talk of it and it would be about 1949. Glenice Maggs (nee Bearne) |
