We are taking a break from developing Bearne.com! As we are getting married this year (after 18 years together) and also making some major life changes, there just aren't enough hours in the day. But we hope that visitors will continue to find the information contained in the site interesting.

This website is for all Bearnes, wherever you live!

The site’s aim is to provide the basis for a "community of Bearnes". It offers a forum for Bearnes to find out about the origins of their name and a focus for genealogical and historical information. We perceive our purpose as acting as 'web masters', not 'owning' the site and hope very much that other Bearnes will want to contribute information and ideas.

During 2006 and 2007, we completely restructured the site.  We are now using a modular content management system (Joomla).  This allows us to use some powerful tools that help us to present information and images simply and clearly. In particular, we spent a considerable amount of time searching for a genealogical web application that will make the information accessible and provide good privacy controls. We had hoped it would enable other people to add sections to the family tree via the website but so far this has proved problematic and we do not currently have time to resolve all the issues.

Many thanks to all those who have sent us contributions for the site over the last ten years; in particular we would like to thank Jon Croot, Roger Beswick and Mike Bearne, all of whom submitted legacy files which we have added recently and to Valerie Bearne who sent us a huge section of the tree to add in. You will find source and credit information for other contributors throughout the site.

We hope you will enjoy using Bearne.com and find the content interesting.  If you have any comments, please do contact us.

Best wishes,

Paul Bearne & Gina Dennis

If you are a Bearne (or close family member) you may wish to register for your own site account. If you then contact us and let us know something about your interest in Bearne family history, we can unlock the private (family only) areas that may be relevant to you.

NewsThis includes Bearne.com site news, a clever system that captures Google Alerts (new mentions of Bearne in Google) and a range of News Feeds on a variety of topics that enable you to access up to the minute news online.

Genealogy (Family Tree) – This has been significantly expanded, with the addition of 246 new individuals, bringing the total to 737. Much more detailed information is included using the new system, with a huge range of charts and reports available to you.  Please see the introductory page to Genealogy for guidance on how to start using this section. (You can now add your information to the tree online.)

Histories – New articles have been added on Bearnes School, Sid Bearne Stoker and Hero of 'Three Before Breakfast', a Bearne Murder and Castle Drogo.

Gallery – This contains a growing Bearne Archive of photos and documents, as well as a collection of Travel Photos. (You can now add your images to a public or private album in our online gallery.)

Recipes – The start of a collection of Bearne Recipes!  This can provide you with a useful place to store your favourites as well as a possible source of culinary inspiration, though you will need to ask us for a separate log-on to add your recipes in.

Bearne Bits – includes articles and travel writing by Bearnes as well as a series of book reviews.  In particular, you may want to check out Bearne Books (books about or by Bearnes). Please let us know about any books we have missed that you come across.

Links – We have included links on an eclectic range of topics, somewhat dictated by our own interests!  Again, the Bearne Connected links may be of special interest.

It has been hard work adding information to the family tree over the eight years since we launched the ‘first edition’ of Bearne.com.  Life has moved on and, for the time being, we have decided to take more of a back seat, leaving room in our lives for other things.

We will therefore not be adding information into the tree for other people as we have in the past.  However, if you register as a site member and tell us a little about your interest in Bearne family history, we can enable you to add your information into the tree using the web site. We will still check data to ensure that it makes sense and appears to be valid before it is made live.

Anomalies

We are currently aware of a number of anomalies - maybe someone, somewhere, has the key to some of these. As we are by no means genealogical experts, we are grateful for any help we can get!

In particular, there seems to be some uncertainty about whether Paul’s line, through Lewis Bearne (ID I18) connects to the correct Andrew Bearne (shown as ID I22) – the researchers who tracked the line back for Air Vice Marshal Guy Bearne found the documentary evidence fragmented around this time.  We do, however, have within the family portraits of Andrew Bearne and his wife Catherine (to be added to the site when we have photographed them).

Family Tree - Privacy

We have tried to ensure that appropriate privacy is respected.  The application we are using on the web is set so that no details are openly displayed for those who are living - you can see that someone has a number of children and grandchildren, but the word ‘Private’ is placed where normally there would be information.  One problem that this gives us is that, if you have sent us information without dates or indication that individuals are dead, you may not be able to see the information because the program will assume that all individuals are living.
